A journalist who has been leading the fight against corruption in Malta has been killed by a car bomb. Daphne Galizia had made several allegations against senior business and political figures. Some of her claims were based on revelations in the so-called Panama Papers leak in 2015. The Prime Minister Malta Joseph Muscat said that a Maltese investigative journalist who had exposed her island nation's links with the so-called Panama Papers document leak was killed Monday when a bomb destroyed her car as she was driving near her home. Daphne Caruana Galizia, had just driven away from her home in Mosta, near the capital, Valletta, when the bomb exploded, sending wreckage spiraling over a wall and into a field. An estimated 3,000 people gathered for a solemn vigil to mourn the death of Daphne Caruana Galizia, Malta’s best-known investigative journalist, who was killed when a powerful bomb blew up her car. The case has stunned the small Mediterranean island which has a population of some 400,000 people. Family friend Luke Frendo told the crowd her death would not be in vain. The Panama Papers span almost 30 years, revealing a wealth of information about banks and the use of shell companies registered in secrecy havens, according to Ryan Chittum, a reporter with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. Chittum spoke about the papers, including how they trace a changing regulatory environment, with ACAMS' Kieran Beer at the 15th Annual AML and Financial Crime Conference in Las Vegas on September 27, 2016.
